When Jannik Sinner beat Holger Rune on Thursday night, he did more than just confirm a place for Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Nitto ATP Finals. The Italian also gave the world No. 1 the opportunity to continue writing the history books.

Djokovic is two wins away from breaking the record for titles he shares with Roger Federer in the history of the tournament. IF the Serb wins on Sunday, he would lift his seventh trophy at the Nitto ATP Finals.

A year ago, at the age of 35, Djokovic became the oldest champion in the history of the tournament. The Balkan surpassed the mark of the previous oldest champion (Federer in 2011) in five years. Djokovic won his first trophy in the season finale event 15 years ago, in 2008, when the event was known as the Tennis Masters Cup.

Djokovic is also trying to move up other rankings at the Nitto ATP Finals. He is currently tied with Bjorn Borg (16-6) for the fifth-best winning record (72.7%). With a 48-18 tournament record, he could overtake Boris Becker (36-13, 73.5%) for fourth place on the list. Ilie Nastase (22-3, 88%) takes first place.

The Serbian could also become the second player to reach 50 wins in the history of the tournament. He has 48 wins after closing his participation in the Green Group with a balance of 2-1. Federer is the leader in this statistic with 59 wins at the Nitto ATP Finals (59-17, 77.7%). No other player has had more than 39 wins in the tournament (Ivan Lendl).

A victory this week would mark Djokovic’s seventh title of the season, which would set the record on the ATP Tour. The Balkan is currently tied with his semi-final rival, Carlos Alcaraz, with six trophies in 2023.
