Tomas Machac got it. Finally he was able to fulfill his dream and sealed this Saturday in Acapulco, by conquering his first trophy at the Mexican Open Telcel presented by HSBC. As an extra prize, the 24 -year -old will debut at the Top 20 of the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday.
The eighth standard defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (6), 6-2 in a great final. Machac was almost untouchable with the serve, winning 29 consecutive points with the first service before giving one to the beginning of the second set. The one -hour and 32 -minute match ended having won 37 of 39 points with the first serve, according to the Infosys ATP statistics.
“My feeling right now is relief, because it was a hard week. Especially when I’m fit, I don’t like losing in the final, ”Machac acknowledged after being crowned in Acapulco. “I am very happy to have managed today, because Alejandro had been playing very, very good. It was a hard battle. ”
“I took out very well. I think without the service today, I don’t think I could have closed it in two sets, ”the new ATP champion continued.
Thus, Machac became the third Czech that conquers an ATP 500 trophy (since 2009), along with the old Top 10 Berdych and Radek Stepanek shots. Likewise, he also became the first player to win his first title above the ATP 250 level from Ben Shelton in Tokyo 2023, and just the fifth since 2020 with Aslan Karatsev in Dubai 2021, Felix Auger-Aliassime in Rotterdam 2022 and Lorenzo Musetti in Hamburg 2022.
The Czech played a perfect game from beginning to end, was almost impeccable from the background, capitalizing the opportunities and dictating the balls with their right. After saving a set of set in 5/6 in the first set timing with a powerful serve that caused an error of the Spanish, the Czech accelerated and did not look back to close the victory in corridos sets.
At the beginning of the week, Machac was the best ranking player who had not won a title in the circuit. Now he did, and amounts to five positions and is located in No. 20 of the PIF ATP Live Ranking. Machac was the number 65 in the world only 12 months ago.
Finally, Machac improved 2-0 in his series Lexus ATP Head2head with Davidovich Fokina, who closed a highlight in Mexico and continues to aspire to conquer his first crown.
The Spanish is completing a great start of the season and this heights is classified as No. 10 of the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin (the classification that adds the points achieved since January). Davidovich has linked two finals in Delray Beach (ATP 250) and Acapulco (ATP 500).
