Tomas Machac and Katerina Siniakova came back from the brink of defeat to claim the mixed doubles gold medal for the Czech Republic at the Paris Olympics.
The Czechs trailed China’s Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen (6/8) in a dramatic tie-break, but after fighting back to 8-all, Zhang double-faulted to set up match point. The Czechs could have sealed gold when Machac’s fierce return of serve led to a volley error from Wang, who had earlier in the set hit a series of volley winners.
Machac and Siniakova, playing mixed doubles for the first time at the Olympics, became the first Czech team to win the mixed doubles gold medal with their 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 victory.
Siniakova, meanwhile, claimed her second gold medal, having won the women’s doubles gold in Tokyo with Barbora Krejcikova.

Earlier, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski took the bronze medal in mixed doubles by beating Dutchmen Wesley Koolhof and Demi Schuurs 6-3, 7-6(2).
The Canadian pair looked set for a comfortable victory after leading 6-3, 3-0 before Koolhof and Schuurs rallied to take the second set to a tie-break. However, the Canadians stepped up their game and became only the second players from their country to win an Olympic medal, following Sébastien Lareau and Daniel Nestor’s gold at Sydney 2000.
Auger-Aliassime, who lost his singles semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz, will have the chance to win his second bronze medal when he faces Lorenzo Musetti.
