If the stage is stained with brick dust, the chances of reaching the final rounds for Sebastián Báez increase exponentially. That, at least, is what is gleaned from his performance on the surface this season.

Without going any further, the Argentine earned a ticket this Wednesday for his fifth quarterfinal of the season—all on clay—by defeating Roberto Carballés Baena in the second round of the Gonet Geneva Open 6-3, 6-0 in a hour and eleven minutes.

The No. 5 seed in Geneva has appeared among the top eight of an ATP Tour tournament this year in Córdoba, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, in addition to Geneva.

The tournaments on Báez land in 2024:
Córdoba – Semifinal

Buenos Aires – Quarterfinals

Rio de Janeiro – Champion

Santiago – Champion

Monte Carlo – First round

Barcelona – Second round

Madrid – Third round

Rome – Fourth round

Geneva – Quarterfinals*

The player born in Buenos Aires 23 years ago awaits No. 2 seed Casper Ruud, who overcame Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 47 minutes.

Ruud, who is the leader in ATP Tour victories this season, extended his mark to 32 match wins and qualified for the quarterfinals for the seventh time this season. The Norwegian has won ten of the eleven matches he has played in Geneva, taking the title in 2021 and 2022.

The world No. 7 dominates the Lexus ATP Head2Head against Báez 2-0, with the two precedents being on clay last year in Estoril and Hamburg.

The quarterfinal matchup was also set up against Alex Michelsen, who surprised No. 3 favorite Taylor Fritz 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, and Tomas Machac, who beat Nicolas Moreno of Alboran 4-6. 7-5, 6-0.

Last Tuesday, the first quarterfinal match was set up in Geneva, starring Flavio Cobolli, after surprising No. 4 seed Ben Shelton 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-2, and Alexander Shevchenko, who benefited from Ruusuvuori’s wo.

Did you know…?

Sebastián Báez will pursue his 20th victory of the season on clay in the Geneva quarterfinals, having already accumulated a 19-6 record on this surface at this point in the season.
