It is only necessary to take a look at the statistics in the last participations of Roberto Carballés Baena on the whipped land of Grand Prix Hassan II to realize that his relationship with the ATP 250 of Marrakech is very special. His numbers touch excellence from 2023 to today.
The Spanish became Wednesday one of the seven players with the most present in the quarterfinals in the history of the Moroccan tournament, qualifying for this tie for the fifth time in his career (2014, 2022-2025). Serial head No. 5 exceeded Otto Virtanen by 6-4, 6-4, in an hour and 20 minutes.
“This track is special to me, I feel very good here, I will try to continue this way,” Spanish confessed about his relationship with the Grand Prix Hassan II.
More presences in the quarterfinals of Marrakech
Younes El Aynaoui: 9
Gilles Simon: 6
Gilbert Schaller: 5
Tomas Carbonell: 5
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez: 5
Benoit Paire: 5
Roberto Carballes Baena: 5
His idyll with the African clay was evident since his first steps in the ATP Tour. When the tournament was still played in Casablanca, it advanced to the semifinals as No. 273 of the PIF ATP Rankings, after overcoming the previous one. Only Guillermo Garcia Lopez, who would end up raising the title, was able to stop his adventure.
In his subsequent visits that relationship of trust with the tournament has reinforced. Especially since in 2023 he won his second ATP Tour crown. Then began a streak that is maintained until today: 11 victories in 12 games played, also including a final last year. However, Matteo Berrettini – his rival in the last round – is the only one who has been able to defeat him since then.
In his second game in this edition in Marrakech, the Andalusian knew how to take advantage of his opportunities and make the rest strong. Especially when Virtanen responded with a break, the Spanish immediately returned it to end 77% of points won with the first service and four breaks turned into six opportunities, according to Infosys ATP statistics.
Carballés now waits in the quarterfinals to the Belgian Raphael Collignon or Portuguese Nuno Borges.
For his part, Hugo Dellien was close to taking a ticket to the quarterfinals, but he could not consolidate his initial advantage against the head of series No. 3 Alexandre Muller who turned the scoreboard 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 35 minutes.
The Frenchman, who premiered in the tournament, will face in the next round with the player from the previous Kamil Majchrzak, who continues to set a week of dream. The Polish, who already demolished the favorite No. 6 Jaume Munar in First Ronda, surpassed Jesper de Jong on Wednesday 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Did you know what …?
The Grand Prix Hassan II has a large number of Spanish champions in its record. In addition to Roberto Carballés in 2023, eight other compatriots have been able to raise the title: Pablo Andujar (2011, 2012, 2018), Guillermo Garcia Lopez (2014), Tommy Robredo (2013), Juan Carlos Ferrero (2009), Santiago Ventura (2004), Fernando Vicente (2000), Alberto Martin (1999) and Tomas Carbonell (1996).
