Novak Djokovic wrote another historic page this Sunday at the Paris Olympic Games.
The 37-year-old Serbian defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a memorable final to claim his first Olympic gold medal. In doing so, the Balkan has completed the collection of ‘Great Titles’ and achieved the Career Golden Slam.
Djokovic has 72 ‘Major Titles’ – a combination of Grand Slam crowns, Nitto ATP Finals trophies, ATP Masters 1000 trophies and Olympic singles gold medals. The Serbian has won at least one Major Title in 16 of the past 18 seasons.
No other player has won an Olympic gold medal, a Grand Slam and all nine Masters 1000 tournaments. The Serbian holds the sole record for Grand Slam singles titles (24), Nitto ATP Finals (7) and Masters 1000 (40).
The Olympics had long been Djokovic’s goal. A bronze medallist in Beijing, the Serbian finished fourth in London and Tokyo. After losing to Alcaraz in straight sets in the Wimbledon final last month, he changed the script in Paris.
Djokovic has won a ‘Major Title’ for every 3.1 events played (72/225). The player with the closest number of such events is Rafael Nadal, who has won one for every 3.5 tournaments played.
The Balkan native, who has won 99 titles on the circuit, will try to become only the third player to cross the threshold of 100 trophies, following in the footsteps of Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103), according to Infosys ATP Stats.
