Carlos Alcaraz recorded his name in the history of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, raising one of the most prestigious trophies of ATP Tour. The Spaniard won the sixth ATP Masters 1000 title of his career on the clay of the Principality and added one of the most desired glasses to a palmarés forged at a fabulous rhythm. With the Mediterranean Sea as a backdrop, in an emblematic postcard for the great champions, the Murcia remembered his authority as a king in the brick dust.

To lift the 18th title of his sports career, Alcaraz needed to manage 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 the wide talent of Lorenzo Musetti, peeling the most important match of his growing career. The Italian, who had defeated Alcaraz in the only final on clay disputed between them in Hamburg 2022, threatened to repeat the feat but the physical problems prevented him from completing the game with ease.

“It is not the way in one wants to win a game,” Alcaraz acknowledged. “Lorenzo has had a hard week, with quite long matches. I’m sorry for him. This is one of his best results and ending in this way is not easy. I hope it is nothing serious and can soon be 100%again.”

Active tennis players with more ATP Masters 1000 titles

On a clay tour where Roland Garros champion starts as a current champion, the Spanish gave an interior conviction effort. Alcaraz leaves Montecarlo as a player with more games won in the season (20) and as the only one that has achieved ATP Tour trophies on two different surfaces, giving continuity to the first title on track of his career achieved in Róterdam in February.

The Court Rainier III of Montecarlo attended a fresh shock on Sunday, a reflection of the new generation that the witness has taken in the largest calendar tournaments. The duel released by Alcaraz (21) and Musetti (23), two figures with full future ahead in the ATP Tour, was the youngest individual final held in the tournament since Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic disputed the Cup of the Principality in the 2009 season.

“I feel very happy to win Montecarlo for the first time. It has been a complicated week, with many difficult situations,” said Alcaraz. “I am proud of how I have managed everything. It has been a difficult month for me, so coming and seeing the fruits of hard work makes me happy.”

Alcaraz’s victory was also a new seal to the precocity that he has assumed since his landing at the ATP Tour. The demonstration of a worthy veteran courage executed with the full vigor of youth. With 21 years and 11 months, an unusual age for these achievements, the Murcia completed this Sunday the fifth most early victory of the century in Montecarlo, only behind the first four titles achieved by the top historical champion Nadal between 2005 and 2008 in the Principality.

Alcaraz will return on Monday to No. 2 World Cup for the first time since November and leave Montecarlo as No. 1 of the PIF ATP Live Rankings with 2,410 points added in the season. The Murcian begins the beaten earth tour with a stroke on the way to the Nitto ATP Finals of Turin, the prestigious season brooch event which will try to qualify for the fourth consecutive year.

For his part, Musetti completed in Montecarlo one of the most special weeks of his career. The Italian, who had never achieved a victory beyond the round of 16 in an ATP Masters 1000, was one step away from lifting his first trophy in the golden category of the ATP Tour. Promoted to the highest position of his career as No. 11 of the PIF ATP Live Rankings since Monday, Lorenzo will continue his whipped land tour next week in Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
