Jaume Munar’s smile had an absolute justification under the sun of Florida. The Spaniard became the protagonist on Friday in Miami, after beating the former champion Daniil Medvedev (6-2, 6-3) to achieve the greatest victory of his career in an ATP Masters 1000. In a demonstration of total courage, the Balearic managed to hold the blows to one of the main favorites and climb until the third round of the tournament with many looks on his shoulders.
“It means a lot to me. I am feeling very well. We have done a lot of work to do tournaments and matches like today. I am very comfortable here. This year I am playing well on a hard surface,” said the Spanish, with a balance 8-4 this season in this type of track. “The beginning of the game has been fantastic, changing rhythms and hitting very deep. Everything has worked from the beginning. I am very happy with the performance and means a lot.”
The words of appreciation by the surface were totally justified. The Spanish, who reached the semifinals in Hong Kong and Dallas in 2025, also demanded five sleeves from Casper Ruud in the Australian Open, highlighting remarkable growth on hard track in recent months. An advance that has been reflected this Friday in Miami, where he managed to twist one of the largest specialists in the circuit.

“I have changed many things in the last two years, but things are not achieved at full speed. I have changed technical aspects, also the tactics in the matches, my right is different. Everything has been working well this year. But I must continue to modify details, I have to see how I can improve my game. Next to my team, we have been doing a good job for a couple of years.”
Munar’s victory was the demonstration of something obvious: his ability to stand up to the first line of the circuit. The Spanish, who accumulated a 2-16 balance against Top 10 figures throughout his career, a collection of attempts in vain in front of the elite, demolished for the third time the door of the strongest on the track. The triumph over Medvedev adds to those achieved long ago against Alexander Zverev (Marrakech 2019) and Casper Ruud (Tokyo 2022), in less impact scenarios.
Now, the task will be special in the hands of the Mallorcan. With the aim of looking for a place in the round of 16 of Miami, something unprecedented in his career, Munar will compete looking for victory No. 100 and round a week of intense flavor. The Spaniard will have to cross blows to the French veteran Gael Monfils, who saved a game point until winning 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (8) to the head of series No. 26 Jiri Lehecka.
