Work and perseverance almost always bear fruit. Above all, when quality is left over. And that is what happened this week to Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, who achieved their first crown of the course this Sunday at the Tiriac Open presented by Unicredit Bank.
Meteorological conditions prevented the main favorites in Bucharest from going to the track at the scheduled time. With a delay of more than three hours, Granollers and Zeballos ended up exceeding the Germans Jakob Shanitter and Mark Wallner in the last round 7-6 (3), 6-4.
“It’s very important for us,” Granollers said, after ensuring his first ATP Tour title of the year. “We did a great week. We had a hard start of the season with my injuries, but we started playing together in Indian Wells, working very hard and I think we deserve this title.”
The Spanish and the Argentine appeared on the Romanian beaten earth with the counter of victories to zero at the ATP Tour. Last March at the ATP Masters 1000 of Indian Wells they started their way together in 2025, but they could not move from the first round in front of the specialists of the individual Jiri Lehecka and Alejandro Tabilo (2-6, 3-6).
The successful passage through the ATP Challenger Tour, where four triumphs were linked to conquer Phoenix, was not enough to move it later at the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami. Again, they gave in their debut against Jamie Murray and Adam Pavlaek 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-10.
But in Bucharest they found their most competitive version to close an impeccable week in which they did not grant a set. Nor in a hard final that lasted for an hour and 32 minutes.
“In the end, the conditions are for everyone,” Zeballos explained about the cold and rain that marked the day in Bucharest. “You need to be calm and try to do what you should. We are very happy. We play a very good week against difficult teams, so it is perfect for our trust.”
Granollers and Zeballos already have 11 titles as a team, highlighting seven ATP Masters 1000 in Montreal 2019, Rome 2020, Madrid 2021, Cincinnati 2021, Shanghai 2023, Rome 2024 and Montreal 2024. In addition, they have also won in Buenos Aires 2020, RÃo de Janeiro 2020, Halle 2022 and Buchast 2024.
