After a suspension due to rain and lightning, there was finally tennis at the Mubadala Citi DC Open and those who brought the light were the Americans Sebastian Korda and Flavio Cobolli.

For the first time since 2001 that three Americans have reached the Washington semi-finals, Korda showed her true level and outlasted Frances Tiafoe to seal a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Meanwhile, Korda will look to end a 17-year wait for a hometown champion on Sunday by becoming the first American to win the DC title since Andy Roddick in 2007. “I thought I served and played very well throughout the match, so I’m happy,” Korda said on court.

To do so, he will face the Italian Flavio Cobolli, 22 years old, who once again signed another battle this Saturday to surprise Ben Shelton with a hard-fought 4-6 7-5, 6-2 over a Shelton who seemed the favorite in the preview.

Cobolli, who competed at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF last November, will be contesting his first final on the circuit. “We’re playing on clay in Rome. I hope the crowd will help me because it will be a tough match,” said Korda, who added his name to the big names who have been champions.
