Jannik Sinner announced that he will be withdrawing from the Paris Olympics on Wednesday after being diagnosed with tonsillitis.

“I am very sad and disappointed. Competing at the Olympic Games was one of my main goals for the season,” the Italian said in a statement. “I was really looking forward to returning to Roland Garros and representing my country at this prestigious tournament. However, after visiting the doctors on Tuesday and waiting one more day to gain more time to see if my condition would improve, things have unfortunately taken a turn for the worse.”

Sinner began feeling symptoms on Monday afternoon after training this week in Monaco. The No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings consulted with his medical team and was advised to withdraw.

“As I said, I am disappointed and I hope to be able to play in the Olympic Games in the future. I was looking forward to competing with my teammates and the rest of the Italian team, and I will now take some time to rest and fully recover. I would like to wish the whole Italian team all the best for this important event and I hope to come back stronger in the future.”
