If you have to start from the preliminary phase, Cristian Garín has no problem if the tournament is Wimbledon. The Chilean, No. 111 in the PIF ATP Rankings, has won the nine matches he has played in his career in the qualy of the London major, managing to advance to the main draw in 2017, 2018 and now in 2024.

The 28-year-old right-hander got the last one this Thursday, beating Kazakh Timofey Skatov with sets of 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. The Chilean played an almost dream match, saving the only break opportunity he faced with his serve and taking advantage of four break points with the return.

The forcefulness of this victory comes after having left his compatriot Tomás Barrios and the Frenchman Enzo Couacaud behind. Thanks to that, this will be his first time in the main draw of this event since 2022, when he reached the quarterfinals (l. to Kyrgios) to mark his best result in Grand Slams.

“It’s been a very nice week for me,” Garín told the Wimbledon website. “I always said that Wimbledon was my favourite tournament, even when I wasn’t having good results. It’s very special to play in the main draw for the sixth time. I just like to enjoy every time I play.”

Thanks to being one of the 16 players with a ticket to the main draw of the tournament, Garín climbs five places to No. 106 in the live rankings. He is getting closer to the Top 100, which he left in mid-May.

Another Hispanic who managed to win in the last round of qualifying was the Spanish Alejandro Moro Cañas. Only in his second Grand Slam qualifying draw, the No. 189 in the PIF ATP Rankings has managed to secure his first time in a main draw at this level, and thanks to three important victories: against the Brazilian Joao Fonseca, the Italian Matteo Gigante and on Friday against Bosnian Damir Dzumhur.

The Spaniard, who was leading 7-6(6), 6-4, 1-0 when his rival had to retire, continues to make strides in his career on the ATP Tour. Two months ago in Munich he played his first main draw match on the circuit against Dominic Thiem, and ended up winning. Now at Wimbledon he will be in his second main draw on the circuit.

In other results of the day, Colombian Daniel Galán lost to Radu Albot 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-3, while Argentine Román Burruchaga was eliminated by Otto Virtanen 6-1, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(4). All the results of the day.
