Freed from playing the opening round at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag due to his status as fourth seed, Francisco Cerúndolo made his debut in the ATP 250 on the Croatian clay with a solid victory on Wednesday.
The eldest of the Cerúndolo brothers defeated local wildcard Matej Dodig 6-3, 6-4 in the second round in Umag in one hour and 29 minutes.
The Argentine made his 20th career ATP Tour quarter-final appearance and the fourth time this season, after also doing so in Rio de Janeiro (semi-finals), Bucharest (quarter-finals) and the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid (quarter-finals).
In his first Lexus ATP Head2Head match, he was impeccable with his first serve, winning 90% of the points he put into play (28/31), as well as not conceding a single break opportunity against the 19-year-old Croatian.
Cerúndolo will face Italian Lorenzo Sonego for a place in the semi-finals. Like the Argentine, he won his ticket early in the day by beating Alexandre Muller 7-5, 6-1 in one hour and 34 minutes.
Also at the top of the draw, the first quarter-final clash in Umag was already set on Tuesday, with top seed Andrey Rublev and Hungarian Fabian Marozsan taking the lead.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo Musetti beat Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti 6-4, 6-3 to secure his place in the quarterfinals. After one hour and 52 minutes of action, the Italian managed to shake off a difficult match and will now face Serbian Dusan Lajovic for a place in the semi-finals.
Did you know…?
Francisco Cerúndolo will play his 40th match of the season in the quarterfinals and will try to balance his win-loss record this season, which so far stands at 19-20.
