The Italian beat Báez in the final this Sunday

No one said it was easy, but the wait is over for Flavio Cobolli. And seven championship points later, the Italian managed to fulfill one of the great dreams of all the players when they break into the ATP Tour: raise a title.

At 22, Cobolli conquered the Tiriac Open presented by DiRiac Open By Unicredit Bank of Bucharest, exceeding a double challenge. On the one hand, the hard weather and rain conditions in the Romanian capital and, on the other, to overcome one of the great surface specialists such as Sebastian Baez.

The Italian conquered his first crown, by beating the main favorite of the tournament 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 46 minutes.

“I feel great. I’m happy, it’s a dream come true.” They were the first words on the track of the Italian, after being crowned in Bucharest. “I always dreamed of winning an ATP Tour tournament and that day has been today. I am very happy to be here, get the best result of my life.”

Serial head No. 3 became the fifth player who premieres his record this season, taking the Jakub Messik witness who did it last week at the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami.

In addition, Cobolli, who played his second final (lost in Washington against Korda) is the second Italian player who won a title this season, along with Jannik Sinner, who won the Australian open last January.

Cobolli broke Báez’s serve twice on the first set to take advantage in the first duel recorded by the lexus ATP Head2head between them. The Italian was gaining confidence and pulling more and more aggressive from the background to run the final and placed with 5-2 in the second partial.

However, the Argentine demonstrated why it is a rock in whipped land. Báez saved three championship points to the rest, preventing Cobolli from closing with his serve. Nor could the Italian convert any of the three opportunities that had the rest in the next game. And with 5-4, he took under pressure. But on the seventh occasion to win the tournament, he got the victory.

“Playing against Sebas on land is always hard,” Cobolli said. “For me he is one of the best on land right now. He has already won many titles, so he is a great fighter and a great day for me.”
