Tomás Etcheverry added his 40th victory on the ATP Tour this Thursday thanks to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Colombian Daniel Galán in the round of 16 of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. US Men’s Clay Court Championship.

Etcheverry’s last victory had been against Galán at the beginning of February, shortly before an injury against the Chilean Nicolás Jarry kept him away from the circuit for almost a month. His return took shape with a defeat in Miami’s debut against Andy Murray, and his return to victory was crystallized this Thursday in one hour and 52 minutes of play.

His reunion with victory occurs precisely in a tournament in which last year, in his first participation, he won four games on the way to the final, an instance in which he lost to local Frances Tiafoe. Of course, she had to push herself to the limit to achieve it, especially in the second set in which she had a 1-4 disadvantage and a lot of nausea.

“In the second set I started to feel something bad in my stomach, and when it served for the match everything was terrible,” said the Argentine, who ended up vomiting in the middle of the court. “I am happy to have obtained the victory. Tomorrow I will have the opportunity to do better.”

“I am very happy to be here. It is one of my favorite tournaments, this year I came with my entire team. Tomorrow will be a difficult game,” warned the 24-year-old right-hander.

The next opponent of No. 30 in the PIF ATP Rankings in the quarterfinals will be the American Michael Mmho, who has just beaten the Australian Max Purcell 6-2, 7-5. It will be the first meeting between the two on the ATP Tour.

In other results of the day, defending champion Tiafoe defeated Australian James Duckworth with sets of 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-5 to record his first victory on clay of the season (and number 30 this season). surface in his career).

No. 21 in the PIF ATP Rankings and now with 185 career match wins on tour, Tiafoe will now face the winner of the duel between Jordan Thompson and Aleksandar Kovacevic.
