Can Joao Fonseca add success on grass to his big year on the ATP Tour?
The #NextGenATP Brazilian will compete next week as a wild card at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, the tournament announced on Friday. It will be the 17-year-old’s first participation on the grass circuit.
Fonseca began the year outside the Top 700 of the PIF ATP Rankings. but he is currently at No. 224, the best of his career, after six very good months. He has amassed an 11-7 record on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2024, while his 5-5 record on the ATP Tour this season includes wild card quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro and Bucharest.
Currently sixth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Jeddah, Fonseca will be hoping to take advantage of another wild card opportunity on the grass circuit in Halle. This month has already marked a milestone on grass: nine days ago, Fonseca defeated former world No. 14 Kyle Edmund in his first ATP Challenger Tour match on this surface, in Surbiton. This week, the Brazilian is in the second round of another Challenger in Nottingham.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 4 Alexander Zverev lead the main draw of the Terra Wortmann Open, which runs from June 17 to 23. The defending champion is Alexander Bublik.
