Highlight as leader of titles (40) in the golden category of the ATP Tour, the Serbian struck another blow to immortality in the costumes.
Ancient No. 1 of the PIF ATP Rankings disarmed a party of increasing difficulty, surpassing 6-0, 7-6 (1) to the Australian Rinky Hijikata to recover the taste of triumph. Djokovic reunited a solvent version on Florida’s slopes, leaving behind a streak of three consecutive losses since he reached the semifinals in the Australian Open.
“I have played at a really good level from the beginning,” said Djokovic, which accumulates a 45-7 balance in Miami. “I knew exactly what I wanted to do at the tactical level. I faced him in my first game of the season in Brisbane. It was positive to do his homework and review those videos.”
Players with more ATP Masters 1000 victories
Djokovic returned to Miami for the first time since the 2019 season with the aim of reuniting the winning spirit that has made him a legend. The Serbian, who aspires to conquer a seventh title of Florida and become a maximum historical champion of the tournament, had linked defeats in Melbourne (retired), Doha and Indian Wells.
“I know that statistics and data have not been good after Australia,” Djokovic acknowledged. “Obviously, it has taken me some more time to find the rhythm after the injury, recover the movements, the zone of hitting, … I have been training very well during the last 7-10 days. I have also made good sessions on this track.”
“I am excited to continue playing at the highest level when I compete in this way. It is always a pleasure to return to a city like Miami after six years of absence. Having so many people in the first game is an honor and I feel very grateful for support.”
Now, the Balkan road will find a rival totally launched to the other side of the network. Djokovic will look for a place in the round of 16 before the Lucky Loser Camilo Ugo Carabelli, installed in the third round after surviving 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3 to the American Alex Michelsen. The Argentine, who had not achieved victories in the final Table ATP Masters 1000 until this week, will be an unpublished adversary in the Lexus ATP Head2head for Belgrade.
