The first winner of a new ATP Tour season is called Pablo Carreño Busta. The Spaniard had a dream debut this Friday in Perth thanks to his 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alexander Shevchenko, a result that puts Spain ahead of Kazakhstan on the first day of United Cup competition.
The former No. 10 in the PIF ATP Rankings, now ranked No. 196, needed just one hour and four minutes to beat an opponent whom he had already defeated this year 6-2, 6-2 in Winston-Salem , where the Lexus ATP HeadToHead between the two began.
Carreño Busta was also categorical this time against the current No. 78 in the rankings. Although he suffered a break in the match (in the first game of the match), the 33-year-old right-hander broke his rival’s serve six times, and only lost 28 points out of 82 in the match played at the RAC Arena in Perth, western Australia.
This result fuels his hope of recovering his best level, which was largely threatened by an elbow injury that kept him out of the circuit between October 2023 and the middle of this year. His great performance this Friday predicts a quick recovery in the ranks.
Her dream debut in this competition also helps Spain partially lead (1-0) on the scoreboard against Kazakhstan, in the absence of the women’s match and the mixed doubles match. The first will be played between Jessica Bouzas and Elena Rybakina.
Spain and Kazakhstan are part of Group C as is the Greek team led by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari. The first in the group will go directly to the quarterfinals, and the next must aspire to become the best second in Perth, where Group A and E are also played (see all groups).
