The peaks of gastronomy and tennis were gathered on day 1 of the BNP Paribas Open 2025. The current champions Carlos Alcaraz and IgA Swiatek met with members of the press and the organization of the tournament to enjoy with a new edition of Tennis Paradise. In addition, they released an irresistible tradition: champions lunch.
Swiatek and Alcaraz attended Porta Via – a Bistro of Californian style with more than 30 years of culinary excellence in the Coachella Valley – inside the Stadium 1 to know two iconic dishes created in honor of its victories of the previous year.
In recognition of Swiatek, champion in 2022 and 2024, their Polish origins were honored with potato and cheese pierogi with caramelized onion, sour cream and scallion.
The relationship between Swiatek and the Pierogi comes from afar. IgA recognized at the attendees the great skill of his father when elaborating this dish, paying special attention so that the wafer has the perfect thickness. This Christmas, according to Swiatek, angered his father when he asked him to do 120 Pierogi for family celebration.
“The most important thing is the dough,” Swiatek said, sitting at the table with the current Alcaraz champion. “I love it, these onions are really good.”
Alcaraz, with a smile from ear to ear, acknowledged not having the opportunity to try the pierogi so far.
“It’s the first time I hear about it,” said the Spanish, between laughter.
Alcaraz, born in the Murcia town of El Palmar (Spain), received a mountain ham and Manche cheese snack with roasted and arugula piquillo peppers, combined with homemade fried potatoes.
“Bread is essential for a good snack,” Alcaraz said.
The two -time BNP champion Paribas Open, of course, is also a lover of good ham.
“In this there are no secrets,” he said. “The Serrano ham is Spain. I have eaten it since I was a small child. For me, it is a classic in the sandwich.”
