Tallon Griekspoor lived on Friday that he will not quickly forget: he defeated the first series and No. 2 of the world Alexander Zverev in the BNP Paribas Open and achieved the greatest victory of his career in Indian Wells.
In a dramatic round trip, Zverev traced from 2-5 to 6-5 in the second set, but could not close the game. Griekspoor took the opportunity and mistakes of Zverev in the Tie-Break of the second set to match the encounter. Griekspoor himself recovered after failing five starting opportunities to the serve at 6-5 of the third set, and ended up imposing himself 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) in his sixth match point.
With his three-hour and six minutes victory, Griekspoor assured his first victory against a Top 5 in his 19th attempt and improved 2-6 in his series Lexus ATP Head2head against Zverev. “It was something so mental. I lost against him five times last year and I had absolute anguish in Roland Garros, where he was up for a double break in the fifth,” Griekspoor said. “I played many battles against him and I had opportunities, but they all left on his side. I am incredibly proud of myself for this performance and for having passed the line.”
The Dutchman arrived at Indian Wells for the first ATP Masters 1000 of the season in good form, after defeating the world Daniil Medvedev on his way to the semifinals of Dubai last month. “I had some ankle problems from the first game and I didn’t know how it was going to be today,” Griekspoor added. “I also felt that it was very hot, more than three hours. I am proud of myself with my mental and physical performance.”
After overcoming Zverev, Griekspoor will try to endorse his outstanding victory when he faced Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the third round. The 2nd head of the series won Fabian Marozsan 6-4 when the Hungarian was forced to retire.
Meanwhile, Tommy Paul beat the American Wild Card Tristan Boyer 6-3 and 6-1 to reach the third round for the fifth time. The 10th head of the series reached the semifinals in California last year and seeks its first 1000 Masters title. Paul will face Cameron Norrie, former champion, who could stop Jiri Lehecka, 23rd head of series, 3-6 6-4 7-5.
Ugo Humbert also advanced, eliminating former quarterfinalist Kei Nishikori 6-4 and 6-3. The French will face the 12th head of the series, Holger Rune, or his compatriot Corentin Moutet.
On a day of surprises, the American Marcos Giron did his own before the fourth series, Casper Ruud, 7-6 (4), 3-6 and 6-2 to achieve his first victory aente a top 5 and reach the third round in Indian Wells for the second time.
“It has been an incredible victory. I will remember it with a lot of emotion,” Giron said. “To do it here, in my favorite tournament, it is special. It was the tournament that came when I was smaller and there was an incredible atmosphere.”
Giron saved four set points to the serve in 4-5 in the first set and was caught with his serve on the decisive set, winning 80 percent (12/15) of his points with the first serve in the third set, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to advance after two hours and 40 minutes. Giron celebrated him big after his victory, throwing a roar and jumping into the Californian sky. The 31-year-old will face Alexei Popyrin after the Montreal champion was imposed on Zizou Bergs 7-6 (4) and 7-5 to achieve his second victory of the season.
For his part, Stefanos Tsitsipas expanded his streak of victories to six games with a resounding 6-2, 6-4 on Thiago Seyboth Wild and will face the Italian Matteo Berrettini in third round, which he defeated in three sets last week on his way to the title in Dubai. Tsitsipas drives Berrettini 4-1 in his series Lexus ATP Head2head.
Holger Rune, head of series No. 12, won with comfort on French Corentin Moutet (6-2, 6-4) and is placed with 7-6 in the season and 5-4 in Indian Wells.
