“It’s about seeing the failures I’ve had and improve them tomorrow.” It was the declaration of intentions of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, after taking a ticket to the quarterfinals of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. Only one day later of those words, the Spanish demonstrated a maturity lesson, taking a step forward to appear in the semifinals of an ATP Masters 1000 for the third time in his career.
No. 42 of the PIF ATP Rankings jumped to the Rainier III track in front of Alexei Popyrin, willing to leave behind the version of emotional ups and downs it had offered in the third round. And he did so, beating the Australian with a convincing performance 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and nine minutes.
“I have improved as a person, I have matured,” said Davidovich Fokina, who has an 18-8 record this season. “When you control things outside the track, it will be easier to control your emotions on the track. Today it was a proof of progress that I am doing this year.”
Davidovich, who was already a finalist in Montecarlo in 2022, returns to semifinals in the Principality. In addition, he had also done it on a hard track in Toronto 2023, completing three presences among the four best players in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
His great moment coincides with a brilliant start of the season, in which he has stayed at the doors to release his record with his first ATP Tour title up to Delray Beach (p. With Miomir Kecmanovic) and Acapulco (p. With Tomas Machac).
In Montecarlo he has continued its ascending dynamics of the entire course, signing the third victory against a top 10 of his career at the ATP Masters 1000 on whipped land. And it is that in Third Ronda it beat the No. 6 Jack Draper, in addition to defeating in its premiere the favorite No. 11 Ben Shelton.
In the first duel in the Lexus ATP Head2head against Popyrin, champion last year of the ATP Masters 1000 of Canada, he countered the 9 direct serves of the Australian with nine break opportunities, turning three of them. In addition, he raised his success with the first service to 81% and did not grant a break option, according to Inpos ATP statistics.
His performance has allowed him to climb twelve positions until No. 30 of the PIF ATP Live Rankings and approach the highest position of his career to date (No. 21).
In search of his second final in Montecarlo, he will have to be measured this Saturday in the semifinals to the head of series No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who traced the Frenchman Arthur Fils 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Did you know what …?
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the only player who in this decade has managed to present himself in the semifinals of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, being classified outside the Top 40. He has done it in this edition as not 42 of the world and in 2022 as No. 48.
