Alcaraz knows his way around Cincinnati

Carlos Alcaraz will return to the ATP Tour next week at the Cincinnati Open, an ATP Masters 1000 on hard courts and in which he will debut against Frenchman Gael Monfils or Australian Alexei Popyrin.

The Spaniard has not competed on the surface since reaching the quarter-finals in Miami in March but comes to Cincinnati with fond memories, having advanced to the final last year.

The 21-year-old right-hander, who has won Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year, is seeking his sixth ATP Masters 1000 crown in Cincinnati, where he was runner-up (l. to Djokovic) a year ago. On that path, his first seeded opponent could be Holger Rune in the third round. The Dane will begin his campaign against Italian Matteo Berrettini in one of the most promising early rounds.

Alcaraz could face seventh seed Casper Ruud of Norway or ninth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the quarter-finals. Fourth seed Daniil Medvedev, who could be a possible opponent for Alcaraz in the semi-finals, will open against either Czech Jiri Lehecka or Argentine Mariano Navone.

Top seed Jannik Sinner of Italy will face Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor or a qualifier. The No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, who became the first qualifier to this year’s Nitto ATP Finals with a win in the Montreal Round of 16 on Saturday, is in the same side of the draw as sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev, who will open against either Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or China’s Zhang Zhizhen.

Third seed Alexander Zverev, who is a possible semi-final opponent for Sinner, will face either Karen Khachanov or Francisco Cerúndolo in his opening match. The latter is another of the most attractive first-round matchups in the main draw that starts on Monday and ends a week later on August 19.
