There was only something more epic than Daniil Medvedev’s dramatic comeback against Arthur Fils, Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open: his celebration after victory.
After a brilliant play at his third game point, which ended in a Fils error, Medvedev began jumping with joy and raising his arms as if he had won the lottery. Known for his inexpressive celebrations, the euphoric reaction of Medvedev quickly went viral.
“If I had made a winning shot at the game point, I would probably have been less excited,” said Medvedev. “But I was surprised. I thought the point was finished, but he failed. That took me adrenaline. I couldn’t control it! ”He added with a smile.
After the celebration, he apologized with Fils for his unusual reaction. “Adrenaline filled me. I jumped beside him. Then I said: ‘I’m sorry, I don’t usually celebrate it.’ But nothing happens, it can happen, ”shared the finalist of the last two editions in Indian Wells.
The victory was a great relief for the number 6 of the PIF ATP Rankings. Medvedev, who suffered a tight defeat in the second round against the star of the #NextGenatp Learner Tien in the Australian Open and wasted four party points to lose in rooms against Tallon Griekspoor in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, acknowledged that trust is key.
“I lost three very tight games this year, two of whom I was very close to winning: before Tien and Griekspoor. The more you lose games like that, the more you lose confidence in those difficult moments, ”he said. “I remember once in 2018, I was surprised, I did not follow the statistics, but I had about 20 timing won in a row, something like that. It’s a matter of trust. Sometimes not, sometimes not.”
