It is one of the most important and prestigious tournaments of ATP Tour, and Spanish tennis has left its mark over the years. The BNP Paribas Open, where Carlos Alcaraz seeks this week his third trophy, has had a long history with players born in Spain that at Atptour.com we review below.
José Higueras, 1983
To become the first Spanish champion of BNP Paribas Open, Higueras beat six US rivals, six local tennis players, including the triumph in the final against Eliot Turtscher 6-4, 6-2. Higueras finished his career with 16 ATP Tour titles, but without a doubt Indian Wells occupies a very special place in his record.
Álex Corretja, 2000
Within the modern era of tennis, Corretja took the second triumph in Indian Wells for Spain, which was also one of the most important titles of his career. The Catalan, who won Thomas Enqvist in the final, defeated Kucera, Rafter, Santoro, Norman and Lapenti on the road to the first series in the first ATP Masters 1000 of the season.
Rafael Nadal, 2007
He has always had a special idyll with Indian Wells, and that love story began in 2007 when the Mallorcan star won the title for the first time in the Coachella Valley. Nadal won the tournament conquering the six games without giving a set, including the semifinals against Andy Roddick and the grand finale against Novak Djokovic.
Rafael Nadal, 2009
The Balearic repeated triumph two years later, in 2009 marked by his rise to No. 1 months before (in the summer of 2008). From the eighth, Nadal defeated David Nalbandian, Juan Martín del Potro, Roddick (as in 2007, the year of his first title) and Andy Murray to lift his second cup in the Californian desert.
Rafael Nadal, 2013
Leaving an important injury that had a large part of 2012, and the first weeks of 2013, Nadal arrived at Indian Wells launched after two titles in a row (Sao Paulo and Acapulco) and took another step by conquering his third crown in Indian Wells. The Spanish had two key games: the rooms against Roger Federer and the grand final against Del Potro, which he won after tracing the first set of that meeting.
Carlos Alcaraz, 2023
The Murcian took the title in the Coachella Valley and became the youngest player to win Indian Wells and Miami by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the grand finale, which also earned him a ticket to return to the world. 1 of the world.
Carlos Alcaraz, 2024
The young Spanish star successfully defended the title, defeating Medvedev in the final and Jannik Sinner in the semifinals (as in 2023). By winning the Italian, in addition, Alcaraz ended a streak of 16 wins of his rival, accessing an Indian Wells final that crown again in front of Medvedev.
