One day like today: Medvedev breaks the Big Four’s lock in the world No. 1

Daniil Medvedev broke the monopoly of the ‘Big Four’ in No. 1 World Cup reaching the top of the PIF ATP Rankings on February 28, 2022.

Medvedev, 26 years old at the time, became the first man other than Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to hold the first position from Andy Roddick in 2004.

“Of course, I feel very happy to reach No. 1. It was my goal since I was young, and I wanted it especially in recent times,” said Medvedev after becoming the 27th player capable of joining Club No. 1 ATP.

The rise of Medvedev to the top was fed by its American hard track tour in 2021, in which the US Open and the Toronto 1000 ATP Masters 1000. In Flushing Meadows, Daniil prevented Djokovic from completing the calendar Grand Slam with a firm victory in running sleeves in the final.

Six months later, Medvedev happened to Serbian as No. 1 World Cup, becoming the most stature player (1.98m) to get this milestone.

Autodenominated ‘Hard track specialist’, Medvedev accumulated points for the PIF ATP Rankings with brilliant surface performances. Daniil ended the season stepping on the Rolex Paris Masters final and the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals. Medvedev reached No. 1 a month after playing the Australian Open final 2022, where he let a two -sleeve advantage over Nadal escape.

Medvedev has occupied No. 1 World Cup for a total of 16 weeks. After a first two-week journey at the top, Medvedev reached the final of ‘S-HertoGenbosch in June to recover the first position. Subsequently, he reached the final of Halle and won the title of Los Cabos in August. However, his presence on the throne ended after the US Open, won by a Carlos Alcaraz who would become the youngest No. 1 in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings.
