There were just a few games left to beat Tommy Paul in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, and Carlos Alcaraz already had his mind set on the semi-finals, but not Wimbledon but the European Championships, more precisely the duel between his country’s national team and France for a place in the final of the football tournament held in Germany.

“I didn’t really think about it at the beginning of the match. Once I felt like I was dominating the match, when I was 5-1 up in the fourth set, I did think about it. I thought I would be in time to see Spain. That wasn’t the case,” Alcaraz said with a smile.

After winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 against the American, against whom he now leads the Lexus ATP HeadToHead between them 3-2, he seemed in a hurry to go watch his team on television. “I’ve just had enough nerves in this match, and I’m going to have more when I watch the Spanish team,” he said in his interview on court.

After his post-match routines, he began to address the media. As he emerged from a room after an exclusive interview, he was informed that Spain had scored. “Come on!” his cry was recorded.

At that point he paused for a few seconds to look at a nearby television. Spain was up 2-1, and the No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings celebrated once again before continuing on his way to address all the journalists in the general press room.

“I did everything in a hurry just to get there in time to see a bit of Spain,” he would later say. After finishing, he had time to watch his country qualify for the European Championship final.

His social media accounts showed his excitement over the result. In addition to an Instagram story, the 2023 Wimbledon champion celebrated on X.

The Juan Carlos Ferrero-led side will try to reach its own final on Friday when it faces Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz leads 4-2 in their Lexus ATP HeadToHead with Medvedev, whom he beat a year ago in the semi-finals of this event.
