Nicolás Jarry closed the season as the best Latin tennis player and he did so after an unparalleled climb. Because he started the year outside the top 150 tennis players in the world in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings and ended it in the Top20.

However, he is far from being alone: with his push, other colleagues from his country were also able to make a place for themselves in the elite of the tennis world, despite some ups and downs. And that was reflected in the final ranking for 2023, where Chile has three representatives within the 100 best players in the world with Jarry (19th), Cristian Garin (82nd) and Alejandro Tabilo (85th).

In fact, the last time there had been three Chileans in this group was on October 5, 2009 with Fernando González (12th), Nicolás Massú (92nd) and Paul Capdeville (95th).

After being No. 17 in the world in 2021, Garín was able to regain his place among the top 100 in the world in 2023, in an irregular season in which he alternated good and bad. Meanwhile, very soon, Chilean tennis could continue adding good news: Tomás Barrios is only three places and a handful of points away from joining the Top100, to sign an even more historic conquest.

Chile only once in history had four tennis players within the Top 100 of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. It was in the early days of the Tour, with Jaime Fillol (Jarry’s grandfather), Hans Gildemeister, Patricio Cornejo and Belus Prajoux, who achieved the record on June 19, 1978.

For now, Jarry, Garín and Tabilo secured their place in the main draw of the Australian Open. Thus, the first Major of the year will be the first Grand Slam since the 2009 United States Open with three Chileans qualified directly to the Main Draw.

In addition, Jarry will lead the Chilean team in the United Cup, a tournament in which Tomás Barrios Vera, Alejandro Tabilo, Daniela Seguel and Fernanda Labrana will also participate.
