Ugo Humbert was reunited with victory in his debut at the Libema Open. The third-seeded Frenchman achieved his first victory since Madrid 6-3, 7-6 (1) against his compatriot Arthur Fils at the ATP 250 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Humbert began his campaign on grass making the difference with a dominant serve. He won 82% of his first serve points and saved the only two break points against him, according to Infosys ATP Stats. His win improved to 2-0 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head with his compatriot and 9-2 overall against French opponents since the start of 2023.
“It wasn’t easy playing against a friend,” Humbert said of FIls. “We will play together at the Olympic Games in doubles. It was nice to play against him. I am super happy with my first victory on grass, my first match on grass. I felt very comfortable.”
Humbert will next face the Dutchman Gijs Brouwer, after the local favorite’s victory against Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3. Brouwer broke the fifth seed four times in seven opportunities to advance to the quarterfinals for the fourth time on the ATP Tour and his first time on grass. The victory against No. 21 in the PIF ATP Rankings was the second against opponents in the world’s top 30 in his career (he beat Ruud at Rotterdam 2023).
Meanwhile, defending champion Tallon Griekspoor ensured that there will be two Dutchmen in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over Mackenzie McDonald, with both local favorites victorious on center court. The World No. 23 is now 16-2 at home since the start of 2023, including a dramatic victory against Miomir Kecmanovic on Tuesday that required three tie-breaks.
