The Italian returns to the semifinals as in 2023
Jannik Sinner does not want to look back and remains in machine mode of playing tennis, and of winning, and this Thursday he added his third victory in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 against Daniil Medvedev to remain the leader of the group stage by second consecutive year at the Nitto ATP Finals.
The first seed easily defeated the 2020 champion, advancing to the semifinals with a perfect record of 3-0 for the second consecutive year. Joining Sinner in the semi-finals will be Taylor Fritz, who achieved a vital victory against Alex de Minaur. Fritz will compete in the season finale semi-finals for the second time, having reached the knockout stage in his debut in 2022.
Medvedev chained three consecutive games in the second set that allowed him to harbor hopes of a comeback, but these were short-lived, as Sinner came back and claimed the victory in 73 minutes.
Sinner, who is bidding to join Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the only men to win the Australian Open, US Open and Nitto ATP Finals in the same year, will continue his campaign against Group runner-up John Newcombe. While Alexander Zverev currently leads the group with Casper Ruud in second, everything remains to be decided in Friday’s action. Zverev will face Carlos Alcaraz and Ruud will face Rublev.
Thus, Sinner confirmed his place in the semifinals and was finally able to lead his Lexus ATP HeadToHead with Medvedev for the first time in his career, after losing his first six duels. In March 2023 they lost the rivalry 0-6, left it at 5-6 in March of this year, and equaled it (7-7) only in October by winning the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai. Now, finally, he took control, 8-7.
Meanwhile, the 23-year-old is 24-1 in his last five events. The Italian also has 48 victories on hard courts this season in 51 games played on this surface.
Did you know that…?
With his 68th win of the year, Sinner equals Zverev for the most wins on the ATP Tour this season (68), to become the first duo to achieve more than 68 wins in a season since Djokovic (82) and Murray (71) in 2015.
