Stefanos Tsitsipas has guaranteed his presence in the quarterfinals in all his participations in the Swiss Indoors Basel since he debuted in the main draw in 2018. He repeated it in 2019, while in his return to the Swiss ATP 500 five years later, this Thursday he equaled the result.
In this edition, which starts as the No. 3 seed, he beat Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round 7-6,(3), 7-5 in one hour and 46 minutes, leaving his record in the tournament at 7 -2.
“I had to stay calm in those difficult moments and it worked out pretty well,” Tsitsipas said. “There have been a lot of tense moments in my last two games, so I’m trying to build confidence, playing those pressure points as best I can.”
“He became critical at many moments, despite winning the first set, he did not collapse, he did not give me the space that I was looking for. I would say that the second set was a greater challenge and even more difficult to play than the first,” the Greek continued his analysis. “It was an incredible game on my part with 5-5 [en el segundo set]”I got those points with good physical condition and defended well.”
His only two defeats in Basel were against Daniil Medvedev (2018) and Roger Federer (semifinals, 2019). This time, he will try to repeat his stay among the four best in the tournament against the No. 7 seed Arthur Fils, who defeated the Spanish Pedro Martínez 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 30 minutes.
The Greek added his second victory to the Lexus ATP Head2Head against van de Zandschulp, joining his victory in Basel to the one he achieved last year in the second round in Antwerp. On this occasion, he did it with 8 aces and a 73 success rate with the first serve, according to Infosys ATP statistics.
For Tsitsipas it is the fourth time this season that he has reached the quarterfinals on hard court this season, after previously achieving it in Los Cabos (SF), Acapulco (CF) and last week in Antwerp (CF).
Did you know that…?
Stefanos Tsitsipas’ performance in Basel keeps his hopes alive of being able to make the Nitto ATP Finals. And the 26-year-old Greek is classified as No. 12 in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, 745 points behind the eighth place occupied by Andrey Rublev.
