Clay courts often bring good news for Argentine players and Tomás Martín Etcheverry is no exception, who on Wednesday celebrated his passage to the quarter-finals of an ATP Tour tournament for the sixth time in his career.

The No. 4 seed defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in two hours and 17 minutes in his EFG Swiss Open Gstaad opener.

Etcheverry has reached the top eight of an ATP Tour tournament this season at six different venues: Córdoba, Buenos Aires, Houston, Barcelona, Lyon and Gstaad.

This result comes after a discreet grass-court season in which he finished with a 1-3 match record, adding his only win on the surface in the first round of Wimbledon (d. Luca Nardi).

She did so in a match in which she aced four times, won 65% of her first serve points and converted five of her nine break point opportunities. This was her 20th win of the season.

The No. 32 in the PIF ATP Rankings will face No. 5 seed Jan-Lennard Struff or local wild card Leandro Riedi in the quarterfinals.

For his part, Juan Pablo Varillas was close to reaching his first quarter-final of the season, but Fabio Fognini saved two match points to prevent it.

The Italian came back from 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 down in two hours and 47 minutes, preventing the Peruvian from making it into the top eight of this ATP 250 on clay, where he had already done so in his two previous participations.

Fognini will face top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals, who opened his participation in Gstaad with a hard-fought victory over the reigning Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF champion Hamad Medjedovic by 7-6(6), 6-3 in one hour and 34 minutes.
