Jannik Sinner’s great season didn’t need more glitter to make it brighter, but the Italian put the cherry on top of an unforgettable year this Sunday in the Davis Cup Finals, lifting the second consecutive Salad Cup with Italy (2023-24) .
The No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, who debuted this year with his first Grand Slam crown, has won a total of eight ATP Tour titles. Among them, the Australian Open, the US Open, the Nitto ATP Finals and the Davis Cup, making him the first player to win in these four venues in the same year.
The trophies at the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami, Cincinnati, and Shanghai, as well as the ATP 500 in Rotterdam and Halle, have also gone to his showcase. All in a season in which he finished with his personal best record of victories, 73 in 79 games, or in other words, he has won 92.4% of what he has played in 2024.
In his last tournament of the year he became the undisputed leader, winning the four points he played (three singles and one doubles), allowing Italy to be the first team to defend the title in the Davis Cup in more than ten years since the Republic. Czech in 2012-13.
“The whole team gave 100%,” Sinner acknowledged about the success achieved together with Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Musetti, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. “There is a lot of work behind it that is not seen. Complicated decisions for Filippo [Volandri]also. So I am very happy to lift this trophy and also to face the preseason with a lot of confidence.”
And the world No. 1 already has his head set in a year where for the first time he will have to defend so many points. 11,830, specifically, almost 4,000 more than his top pursuer Alexander Zverev, ranked No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings (7,915).
Of course, the Italian will have a brief but well-deserved rest in the coming weeks. “It’s time for a little free time, which will be good for all of us. “It has been a long season,” he warned. “We were joking before that in less than a month you have to start again if you want to play the first tournaments.”
So now it’s time to enjoy the present, the last great achievement of the season. “Last year was a different feeling. Every year is different. Count on Matteo [Berrettini] here as a player and teammate, it makes it a little different,” Sinner said.
“It is difficult to compare it,” he continued his assessment of this edition compared to the previous one. “Every year and every tournament is different. Last year we played one more doubles in the semifinals, which makes it not easy to recover for the next day,” he recalled about his matches in 2023 against Novak Djokovic in singles and doubles.
“It is very difficult to compare it. We are just happy to have won it once again and in the future we will see how it goes,” concluded the Italian who is willing to prolong an unprecedented era for tennis in his country.
