The United States is the only country that is still present in the United Cup 2025 table, which already knows what it is to win the title in the mixed team competition.
And in this edition they seem willing to repeat the success they achieved in 2023. To do so, they still have to overcome one more qualifying round, although now they are closer, after Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz sealed their place in the final against the Czech Republic.
Fritz closed the work that Gauff had started shortly before. The American suffered against Tomas Machac, who was 7-6(4), 5-3 in his favor, but the No. 25 in the PIF ATP Rankings lost three consecutive games and ended up retiring against the No. 4 in the world.
“He told me that he had been having cramps for a couple of games. I didn’t realize it, but yes,” Fritz warned in the interview at the foot of the track. “He was moving really well, but I guess he was still playing through it, fighting. “There is a lot of humidity.”
“I thought that it was a possibility if I won the set, to take it to the third and I thought that maybe the cramps could appear. “They are tough conditions, it was a physical match,” added the American.
Before, the No. 3 of the Hologic WTA Rankings Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova in the first women’s singles match 6-1, 6-4, in one hour and 26 minutes.
“It’s never easy against Karolina,” Gauff acknowledged. “I was intense and focused throughout the game, and I think that made the difference today. “I’m happy to have gotten the team off to a good start here in Sydney.”
The American, who had won her three previous matches against the Czech, did not leave any set along the way, as she had done in the previous events in Cincinnati 2023, US Open 2023 and Beijing 2024, and now she rules in the face to face 4-0.
Gauff’s great performance will allow Taylor Fritz to have the opportunity to qualify for the final, if he is able to defeat Tomas Machac in the second match of the eliminatory.
“It’s a tough match, Machac is a great player,” said the American about the second match of the series. “I have complete confidence in Taylor. He is a great player, he has one of the best heads on the circuit. I’m not saying it just to say it. After spending time with him at the Olympics in mixed doubles, today and this past week, this is just the beginning. That’s why I’m very confident that he will win. And, if not, I will be prepared to play the mixed one.”
Poland awaits in the final, having beaten Kazakhstan 3-0.
