Winning a fifth set is often more a result of knowing how to resist, of confidence and of belief, beyond whether the tennis flows more or less after several hours of playing.
Thus, the Chilean managed to extend his state of grace on this tour, linked his sixth consecutive victory on grass and signed the third round at Wimbledon for the first time after beating the Italian Flavio Cobolli by a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), 4-6, 4-6 and 6-4 and after three hours and 53 minutes of match.
The Chilean, who this week sits at a career-high PIF ATP Rankings of World No. 19, arrived in the English capital as the recent champion of last week’s Mallorca Championships presented by Waterdrop to become the first player from his country to win an ATP Tour tournament on the surface.
This time, on Court 14 at the All England Club, Tabilo came through strong in the key moments of the match, hitting 13 aces and withstanding a tough battle against a talented and difficult opponent to extend her win-loss record on grass to 8-5 and thus sign her best result in SW19.
After two high-level first sets that the Chilean managed to close out in two neat tiebreaks, Tabilo could not maintain his consistency and it was the Italian who raised his performance to equal the match by winning two consecutive sets.
The final set was also far from a formality. In fact, the Chilean saved three break points serving at 1-1, before breaking to take his first lead. Even though Tabilo gave up his serve in the next game, the Chilean did not lose hope and with his heart he remained firm on the way to the finish line.
In an attempt to extend his run of grace at the British Grand Slam, he will now go for a place in the round of 16 against Taylor Fritz and Frenchman Rinderknech. The American won 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and leads the Lexus ATP Head2Head against Tabilo by 2-0.
Did you know…?
Cobolli had won the three previous matches he played in 2024 against Chilean tennis players: against Nicolás Jarry at the Australian Open and at the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid, a tournament where he had also beaten Tabilo, who managed to break the streak.
