Taylor Fritz reaches at least one semifinal of Masters 1000 per season since 2021. The American has lengthened the streak this Thursday by beating Matteo Berrettini with partials of 7-5, 6-7 (7), 7-5 to add his first victory in a quarterfinals of the Miami Open presented by Itau.
While he had not lost sets in the fortnight before this duel, Fritz had to suffer to continue advancing. His greatest merit was to continue struggling despite wasting six match points in the second partial, one of them with his serve.
The reward reached two hours and 44 minutes of play when he stayed with the victory, No. 80 of his career at AT Masters 1000 level.
“There are two options. Frustrate, lose and then frustrate me even more for all the opportunities I wasted, or rebuild and get victory,” said Fritz. “Now I can sleep tonight without being so angry at the opportunities I wasted.”
No. 4 of the PIF ATP Rankings now has semifinal presences at this level in Indian Wells 2021 and 2022, Montecarlo 2023, Madrid 2024, Shanghai 2024 and Miami 2025. The American can already say that he is the twelfth player of his country with advances to semifinals in the first two ATP Masters 1000 of the season.
In addition, he has become the eighth American tennis player to reach this round in Miami during this century, matching John Isner, Mardy Fish, Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, Vincent Spadea, Jan-Michael Gambill and Pete Sampras. On Saturday against Czech Jakub Messik will seek to be the first place from Isner in 2019 to qualify for the final of the tournament.
And his level gives to think he can achieve it. After he could not specify six match points on the second set (two to the rest in 6-5 and four in the Tie-Break), the 27-year-old right-handed continued to send in the duel and contain the incredible level of No. 30 of the world on Thursday night.

The rupture in 5-5 brought him closer to triumph once more. In the next game, more than an hour after his latest Match Point, Fritz did not speculate to keep his victory No. 14 of the season.
“It was difficult. He told me that he had played well and that it wasn’t my fault, so I didn’t frustrate myself,” Fritz said to reflect on the end of the second set. “I think my best moments were when I had three game points with his serve. I had to have won one of them.”
“I can’t be too frustrated by the point in 6/5; the truth is that I made a really good serve and he gave himself completely. If he had taken 177 km/h out, he would probably have made an ace. But he gave himself hard to the return and razed. I have to recognize the merit; he raised his level a lot.”
With this result, Fritz leaves his lexus ATP Headtohead with Berrettini and will enter with another perfect record to his semifinal duel after beating Mensik 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 in the only previous duel between them, played two years ago in the US Open.
Did you know what …?
Taylor Fritz now has a record of 298-195 in his career at the ATP Tour. If Sunday he adds his second title in an ATP Masters 1000, he would also reach his victory No. 300.
