A detailed summary of next week’s action
After a splendid season on the ATP Tour, the Nitto ATP Finals have arrived. The eight best qualified players face the final tournament of the year in Turin from Sunday.
Italian world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz aim to lift the title for the first time, while former champions such as Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev will look for big performances in northern Italy. Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, Alex de Miñaur and Andrey Rublev complete the individual squad.
In doubles, eight couples will take to the court in Italy, where Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavic start as the main seeds. Ahead of the tournament, ATPTour.com reviews five key points to watch at the Inalpi Arena.
1) Sinner as local idol: Jannik Sinner has had a stellar season on the ATP Tour, climbing to No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings and winning Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and US Open. With a balance of 65-6 this year, the Italian, leader with seven trophies in 2024, will seek to expand his collection in Turin. Last season, Jannik reached the final, losing to Novak Djokovic.
2) Grupo Ilie Nastase: Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur accompany Sinner in the Ilie Nastase Group. Medvedev, champion in 2020, faces his sixth consecutive participation in the tournament, while Fritz stepped into the semifinals in 2022. Australian De Minaur, champion of two titles this year, will make his debut in the tournament.
3) John Newcombe Group: Two-time champion Alexander Zverev leads the John Newcombe Group alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev. The German arrives in Italy after winning the Rolex Paris Masters, while Alcaraz will try to improve on the semi-final achieved in Turin last season. Alcaraz and Zverev extended a great rivalry in 2024, with the Spaniard dominating 2-1 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head history this year. Both are equal (5-5) in the complete balance. Ruud and Rublev have lifted two trophies in 2024.
4) Doubles stars: Top seeds Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavic lead the field and will compete in Group Bob Bryan alongside Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, and Kevin Krawitz and Tim Puetz. Second favorites Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos start in Group Mike Bryan alongside Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic, Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson, and Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.
Koolhof (2020), Mektic (2020) and Granollers (2012) are former doubles champions in the tournament.
5) Turin hosts for the fourth year: The Inalpi Arena will host the season finale for the fourth consecutive year. The 54th edition of the Nitto ATP Finals welcomes the eight best players divided into two groups, where the best two in each group will advance to the semifinals. A large crowd is expected at the Inalpi Arena, where the players have trained since Monday.
