The only time this season that Roberto Carballés Baena reached an ATP Tour quarter-final on clay, he ended up lifting the title. Three months later, the Spaniard has again qualified among the last eight, this time at the Nordea Open.

The No. 54 in the PIF ATP Rankings overcame Kazakhstani qualifier Denis Yevseyev 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 17 minutes. He did so a day after also turning around his first-round match against No. 6 seed Roman Safiullin.

Carballés Baena thus managed to reach the quarter-finals of an ATP Tour tournament for the third time this season, after doing so in Auckland (hard court) and Marrakech (clay), where he was champion.

In total, the 31-year-old Andalusian has already accumulated 19 appearances in the quarter-finals of an ATP Tour tournament, with a record of 5-13 in this round (he has always won on clay).

This victory also virtually returns him to the world Top 50, a position he already occupies in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, after beating Yevseyev. To continue growing in Bastad, he will have to overcome the reigning champion and No. 1 seed Andrey Rublev or the Argentine Thiago Agustín Tirante.

Brazilian Thiago Monteiro opened the day on Wednesday with the biggest surprise of the tournament, defeating No. 2 seed Casper Ruud in the second round 6-3, 6-3, in one hour and 28 minutes.

The Norwegian was one of three players who knew what it was like to lift the title in Bastad present at this edition, along with Rafael Nadal and Rublev. But Monteiro finished off an impeccable performance to claim the fifth victory of his career against a Top 10 player.

The Brazilian has won his last four matches against a Top 10 player: No. 9 Ruud at Bastad 2024, No. 4 Rune at the 2023 Davis Cup, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz at Rio de Janeiro 2024 (1-1, Ret) and No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2024 ATP Masters 1000 Madrid.
