Spaniard Rafael Nadal will join Team Europa this year to compete in the seventh edition of the Laver Cup, which will take place at the Uber Arena in Berlin from September 20 to 22.
Nadal will join world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, No. 4 Daniil Medvedev and No. 5 Alexander Zverev in trying to regain the Laver Cup trophy with the European team under the tutelage of captain Bjorn Borg.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion, who could play his last season on the circuit in 2024, signed his long-awaited return to the ATP Tour last week at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
Berlin will attend Nadal’s fourth participation in the Laver Cup. The Mallorcan was present in Prague 2017, Geneva 2019 and, in an emotional edition, forming a doubles pair with Roger Federer in the last match of the Swiss’s career at The O2 in London 2022.
“I am very happy to play the Laver Cup in Berlin for Team Europa,” said Nadal. “I have very special memories of my participation in the Laver Cup, including the emotions we experienced in London two years ago accompanying Roger for the last time.”
“At this point in my career, I want to make the most of every opportunity I have. Being part of a team is always an incredible experience and I have always enjoyed it. The competition is different and exciting. I am looking forward to visiting Berlin and helping Team Europa recover the Laver Cup”.
Borg was delighted to have Nadal in his ranks, as he finishes putting together the six-player team for the last time this season.
“Rafa is a great legend of our sport, a champion in every sense,” Borg said. “It is my last year as captain. Having him on Team Europe this season was a personal goal and I am delighted that he has accepted my invitation. He will be with us in Berlin.”
“He loves the Laver Cup and is one of the best competitors the sport has ever seen. The goal is to win back the Laver Cup and having Rafa alongside Carlos, Daniil and Sascha gives us an incredible lineup for now.”
Team World captain John McEnroe announced his team’s first three players earlier this month – Australian No. 1 Alex de Minaur and Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul. All of them participated in the historic first victory of the World Team in London. Fritz and Paul were also present on last year’s winning team in Vancouver.
This will be the last year that Borg and McEnroe meet as Laver Cup captains, having held the positions since the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague in 2017.
Named after Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, the Laver Cup is contested on an iconic black court that will be installed at the Uber Arena. Over three days of competition, the tournament pits six of the best players in Europe against six rivals from the rest of the world.
The three highest-ranked players on each team are guaranteed an invitation based on their individual PIF ATP Rankings on the Monday after Roland Garros (June 10, 2024). The remaining three spots will be captain’s choices and decided before the start of the US Open.
Since its inception eight years ago, the Laver Cup has become one of the most prestigious tournaments on the calendar, bringing together world-class tennis and entertainment with great partners and hospitality packages to create a sporting spectacle unrivaled anywhere in the world.
Tournament-wide packages, which provide the same seat for all five sessions of the event over three days, and a range of multi-session packages, with the same seat for select sessions of the tournament, are on sale through from the Laver Cup Ticket Shop – managed by CTS Eventium – at lavercup.com/tickets. Single session tickets for all five sessions of the tournament will go on sale on Friday, May 17 at 10:00AM CET.
