Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson are having one of the best weeks of their lives, reaching their second consecutive Grand Slam doubles final after beating Americans Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 6-4, 7-6(4) in the US Open semi-finals on Thursday night.
The Australians will now have a chance to redeem themselves after squandering three points in the Wimbledon final in July. They will face Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in Saturday’s final.
“What makes it so special is that we are such good teammates. Every time we win I am overwhelmed with happiness,” Purcell said. “It’s not just the achievement, it’s who you do it with. This year we set out to win a Grand Slam, so to be within one match again is special.”
Purcell and Thompson improved to 36-6 on the year. Purcell is chasing her second MAJOR doubles title after partnering Matthew Ebden at Wimbledon 2022. Thompson is seeking her first Grand Slam crown.
For their part, Krawietz and Puetz stopped the duo Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavic by a tight 6-3, 6-7 (9) and 6-4 after two hours and 19 minutes.
In fact, the Germans, who had a match point in the second set, came back from 2-4 and 0-40 down on serve in the set to finally win the last four games of the match against the fourth seeds, who had won eight games in a row after winning the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati.
“We could have won the second, we should have lost the third, and we almost came from the dead,” Puetz said with a smile. “It’s our second season and we’ve done a great job of competing as best as we can every week and believing that we can beat any pair,” Krawietz said.
