Pablo Carreño Busta arrived at the Winston-Salem Open without too many expectations, with the intention of continuing to recover his level and having just reached, again, the Top 300 of the PIF ATP Rankings. However, the American ATP 250 witnessed a great performance by the Spaniard who advanced to the semifinals for the third time in his career in this tournament (2016, 2018, 2024).

However, Carreño Busta was unable to put the icing on the cake of a great week by making it to the final. Before that, he had to say goodbye in the semi-finals against local Alex Michelsen. The 33-year-old from Asturias decided to end his participation with a score of 7-6(5), 2-1, after one hour and 14 minutes of play.

“I would have liked to be able to finish today’s match, but in my round of 16 match (against Alexandar Vukic) I felt some discomfort in my abdomen that I’ve been carrying around for a couple of days,” he explained after his withdrawal through his official social media channels.

“I tried to give it my all on the track as I always do, but little by little I was feeling worse and I decided to stop as a precaution,” she continued in her brief statement on Instagram.

The Spaniard, who won the first of his seven ATP Tour titles in Winston-Salem 2016, played this year thanks to a wild card. And he had nothing but words of thanks for a tournament in which he became the player with the most victories (19) in its history this year.

“I can only thank the Winston-Salem Open for the opportunity it has given me, another very positive week,” added the former Top 10 player. “Now, it’s time to rest and recover so I can try to be 100% on Monday at the US Open.”

Carreno leaves Winston-Salem ranked No. 213 in the world ahead of his next match at the US Open, where he will open his participation against Frenchman Arthur Cazaux.
