Reilly Opelka endured multiple delays for rain and a hard track test by Jesper de Jong during the day on Tuesday at the Open Libma of ‘S-HertoGenbosch.
Despite letting an advantage of 5-2 escape on the second set and being two points from the defeat in 5/5 of the Tie-Break, the American ended up imposing himself 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-2 after two hours and 43 minutes.
“It was a complicated game. He won me, without a doubt,” Opelka said. “It is the first time that I play against Jesper. Obviously, I have been observing, especially these last two weeks, when he has achieved many important victories. He has impressed me a lot. I saw him play against [Davidovich] Fokina in Rome, and had never seen him play before. Beat a [Joao] Fonseca last week, so he is improving a lot and is an exceptional player. ”
Opelka connected 19 aces, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to ensure a triumph in two hours and 43 minutes in his debut in ‘S-HEVENGOGENBOSCH. The number 87 of the PIF ATP Rankings, which surprised Novak Djokovic on the way to the Brisbane final in January, will face the Chilean Nicolás Jarry in the second round.
It will be the first confrontation between the two in the main cadres of the ATP Tour. The first series, Daniil Medvedev, is a possible rival in the quarterfinals for the winner.
In other results of the day, Zizou Bergs and Mackenzie McDonald also achieved victories in three sets. The Belgian won 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (3) in a duel against his compatriot Alexander Blockx, a member of the #NextGenatp, allowing him to quote the fourth head of the series, the Australian Alexei Popyrin. McDonald, meanwhile, surpassed the Italian Mattia Bellucci 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3 and will then face the third head of the series, Karen Khachanov.
With the Hubert Hurkacz match against Roberto Bautista Aguet, postponed to Wednesday due to the interruptions in ‘S-HertoGenbosch, the other male individual winner on the second day was Otto Virtanen. The Finnate guest defeated Argentine Tomás Etcheverry 7-6 (6), 7-5, which allowed him to dispute the second round against Nuno Borges.
