Novak Djokovic conquered his 99th title in the circuit last July, when he won the gold medal in individuals at the Paris Olympics. Only a title of reaching the century of crowns, the Serbian has had to wait to join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the only players who have reached the hundred.
However, that wait could end on Sunday at the Miami Open presented by Itau after the 37 -year -old player advanced to his first final of the season and his 60th match for the title ATP Masters 1000 in total, Friday in Florida.
For Djokovic, the milestone of the 100 titles has been in his mind since his triumph in Paris.
“Since I won my 99, which was at the Paris Olympic Games, I have been playing with the perspective of winning the hundred special titles,” said Djokovic after defeating Grigor Dimitrov in Miami. “I played the Shanghai final. I was close there. Australia semifinals. Then I have been trying to find that level of tennis necessary and so necessary that I put me in a position to fight for a trophy, a great trophy.”
“That is what I have been doing this week. I have been very happy with the way I have prepared for the tournament, with the way I have been playing. I have not lost a set. It is a great opportunity. Let’s see what happens within two days,”
Djokovic reaches a final of the circuit for the twentieth consecutive season, matching Federer’s record, and will also look for his seventh title in Miami, surpassing Andre Agassi.
The legend of Football Lionel Messi, who witnessed the victory of the Serbian, observed him on Friday in Florida. Djokovic revealed that he met Inter de Miami captain and winner of the World Cup after the game.
“It was the first time I played in front of him. I have seen him play several times. I think in the final phase of the World Cup, when he won with Argentina. I think that last year I saw him once. I think it was in Los Angeles with the Inter de Miami. Obviously delighted to have his whole family. I saw him after the game. He came to the costume. We spent a while speaking and exchanged gifts,” Djokovic said.
“It is a great honor. He is a great athlete, not only a soccer player. Its impact on the world of sport in the last 20 years has been immense. That I see my Messi.
If Djokovic achieves a perfect performance of 10 out of 10 in the final, it is likely that he marks from Miami with the trophy. On his way, Sunday afternoon (not before 3:00 p.m. local time), will be the Czech Jakub Mensik, 19.
Djokovic, No. 5 of the PIF ATP Ranking, expects a tough test. “I’m going to have to return well because the service is very big. It will be a great game,” said Djokovic, who puts Mesik 1-0 at the Lexus ATP Head2head.
“It’s the first final in Miami. For me, not the first,” he said laughing. Djokovic is the finalist of Masters 1000 more veteran in history and will try to conquer its 41st title of this level on Sunday, a record.
