They are pure spectacle.
Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios started their 2025 season together, with a great victory to open their mouths this Monday in the doubles category at the Brisbane International presented by Evie, where they showed that in addition to having fun they can be competitive as a team.
The guest couple overcame a tough debut against Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies that fell to their side 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-8. The highlight of the match held at the Pat Rafter Arena came in the tenth game, when Djokovic was able to get around the net with a great shot of talent that brought the crowd to its feet.
But it was not the only inspirational blow of the game. Kyrgios accompanied the show with a series of trademark shots: a spectacular lob, a trick between the legs… all to end up sealing the victory in one hour and 47 minutes.
The Australian had not competed on the ATP Tour for 18 months due to injury. Kyrgios, who reached No. 13 in the PIF ATP Rankings and was a finalist at Wimbledon 2022, is trying to recover his best level, precisely alongside the player who beat him in his only Grand Slam final.
Djokovic and Kyrgios will be the rivals in the second round of the main favorites Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus, who entered directly by enjoying a ‘bye’.
The next challenge for Kyrgios will be in the first individual round against the Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard no earlier than 2.30 pm (local time) this Tuesday. After that match, Djokovic will make his solo debut against Australian guest Rinky Hijikata in his first singles match since losing to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner at the Rolex Shanghai Masters last October.
