Mariano Navone is still flying in 2024 and it seems that he landed years ago on the ATP Tour and not that this is his first season at the highest level of the Circuit.

After being a finalist in the ATP500 in Rio and reaching the semifinals in Marrakech, the Argentine, seeded No. 5, confirmed his level and beat the Italian Luciano Darderi 6-2 and 6-3 to reach the second round at the Tiriac Open.

Navone, No. 52 in the PIF ATP Rankings, needed just one hour and 33 minutes of play to seal an auspicious debut. “Luciano is a friend and it is difficult when you play against someone you are used to playing against since you were ten years old, but I think I played a great game,” analyzed the 9 de Julio player.

“I was able to do a lot of things well and that makes me happy,” he said, after signing his 17th victory of the season and No. 9 at the ATP Tour level. What is the secret of his quality leap in 2024? “Not if there is a secret, but I am training hard with my coach Andy and I try to learn at all times,” he said with a laugh, pointing to his coach Andrés Dellatorre.

Navone will next face Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild, who saved five match points before he was able to overcome Italian Luca Nardi 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2). For now, the Argentine has already secured a jump to the Top50 as world No. 48 in the PIF Live ATP Rankings with his victory in R1.
