A year ago, Tommy Paul was twice to a set of qualifying for his first Masters 1000 final, but Daniil Medvedev ended up imposing himself on the third set of that semifinal in the BNP Paribas Open. Although he beat him months later in Rome, Paul will have the possibility of looking for revenge of his defeat a year ago in the desert.
It will no longer be in the semifinals but in eighths, around which both classified this Sunday of flatly opposite ways. Medvedev achieved it by leaving the premises to the premises Alex Michelsen, who retired at illness when the finalist of the last two editions won 2-0 in just ten minutes of play.
“I played a very good first round, so I was looking forward to playing against Alex,” said Medvedev. “I didn’t see him play too much, but I like his way of playing and I think he could have been an interesting game. It is a pity that it has been intoxicated with food or something, but it can happen. ”
“It is not easy to play here, conditions are always hard. Before the tournament I was starting to lose the pace, but I recovered it after the first game. I’m starting to feel better here. ”
Before, Paul had achieved his progress beating a former tournament champion, British Cameron Norrie, with 6-3 partials, 7-5. Although he could not save any of the three Break Points he faced, the tenth series broke six opportunities and stayed with the triumph in an hour and 32 minutes.
In addition to leaving in 2-3 his Lexus ATP Headtohead with Norrie, Paul also reached 50 victories in his career in ATP Masters 1000. He will pursue one more when he measures a rival whom he first won in Rome 2024 after having lost the first three parties of rivalry, including that of twelve months ago.
Fils signs one of his greatest comebacks
In other results of the day, the Frenchman Arthur Fils beat 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to Italian Lorenzo Musetti. No. 21 of the PIF ATP Rankings not only traced a 0-1 in sets. He also saved a match point with the serve in the 5-6 of the second partial.
Fils won just a point more than his rival in the game (97-96). Enough to prevail in two hours and 31 minutes, and to leave in 1-1 his lexus ATP Headtohead with Musetti, who had won it last year in Montecarlo.
This is the second time that the French advances a few octaves at the ATP Masters 1000 (and first from Paris 2024) level. Now he will look for his debut in the quarterfinals when he measures the local Marcos Giron, who comes from beating the Australian Alexei Popyrin with partials of 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. The winner will first advance to about a quarter of this category.
