Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson will play their first Grand Slam final as a team at Wimbledon after booking a ticket to the title match against the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings No. 1s on Thursday.

The Australians, who started as No. 15 favorites on British grass, defeated Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 11 minutes on Court 1 of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

This result continues the great season that Purcell and Thompson are having, who have already accumulated three titles in Dallas, Los Cabos, Houston. Their qualification for the final at Wimbledon has also allowed them to rise to No. 7 in the PIF ATP Doubles Team Rankings, the ranking that gives virtual access to the Nitto ATP Finals.

Purcell and Thompson have had a practically flawless fortnight. They have only dropped one set on their way to the final. They opened their participation against the locals Jay Clarke and Marcus Willis (6-4, 6-2), in the second round they eliminated Fabrice Martin and Matwe Middelkoop (6-4, 7-5), while in the third round they had no problems in beating Andreas Mies and John-Patrick Smith (6-4, 6-3).

In the quarter-finals against the Argentines Máximo González and Andrés Molteni they had to work hard to stay alive in the tournament (6-4, 6-7[8]6-3) and in the semi-finals they won in 71 minutes against the best pair in the world (6-4, 6-4).

For Purcell, the experience is not new. The 26-year-old Australian already knows what it is like to win the trophy at Wimbledon, having done so in 2022 teaming up with compatriot Matthew Ebden. He also has two more Grand Slam finals under his belt at the Australian Open in 2020 (with Luke Saville) and 2022 (with Ebden).

Thompson, who opened his ATP Tour career this year in Los Cabos (d. Casper Ruud), is bidding for the biggest title of his career. Although he won the trophy with Sebastian Korda at the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid, he already has four titles with Purcell (all ATP 250).

Now on Centre Court this Saturday they will try to put the finishing touch to their spectacular performance against Neal Skupski and Michael Venus or Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.

For their part, the Spaniard and the Argentine were seeking their third final since 2021 – they did not participate in 2022 – and fell short, just as happened in the last edition of Roland Garros (they lost in the semi-finals to Arévalo/Pavic).

However, Granollers and Zeballos will leave Wimbledon strengthened as the world No. 1 in the doubles rankings.
