The EFG Swiss Open Gstaad is a special tournament for Matteo Berrettini for many reasons: he won his first title on the Swiss clay, he has always reached at least the final when he has played there and this Sunday he added his ninth crown to his list of achievements.

The Italian beat French qualifier Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-1 in 59 minutes in the final round, confirming his love affair with the ATP 250 in Gstaad.

Berrettini lifted his ninth ATP Tour trophy and repeated it on a stage where he had already done so in 2018. The No. 6 seed made his debut in Gstaad and six years later he has repeated the title. In this way, this tournament joins Queen’s (2021-22) and Stuttgart (2019, 2022), the other two stages where he has won twice.

“The feeling is incredible. It feels like yesterday when I won my first title six years ago, but so many matches and so many things have happened,” Berrettini said in the courtside interview. “I’m very happy that I can still play and enjoy it, and I think I found the energy I had six years ago this week. It’s a special place for me. I’m very happy.”

The Italian’s trophy cabinet also includes trophies from Budapest 2019, Belgrade 2021, as well as Marrakech this season. Despite having played just seven tournaments in 2024, he has already won two titles this season, which have allowed him to go from No. 154 in the PIF ATP Rankings at the start of the year to No. 50 next Monday.

To do so, this week in Gstaad he had to overcome Pedro Cachin, the reigning champion, in the first round; Daniel Elahi Galán in the second round; while in the quarterfinals he was able to beat the No. 3 favorite Felix Auger-Aliassime; and in the semifinals he eliminated the top favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas. All without losing a set.

In the final round against Halys, an opponent against whom he had no previous experience in the Lexus ATP Head2Head, he maintained the same script as in the previous days.

“It was his first final, of course you have a lot of thoughts in those moments, especially when you stop and someone has just broken you,” Berrettini added about the rain break with the score at 5-3 in his favour. “At first, I tried to see how to play, because during the week the conditions were very different.”

The Frenchman, who was playing in his first ATP Tour final, was aiming to become the third qualifier to win a title this season after Tabilo (Auckland) and Darderi (Cordoba). Despite failing to do so, he has climbed 67 places in the PIF ATP Live Rankings to No. 125.

Bhambri and Olivetti win the doubles
In the doubles category, the title went to the third favourites in Gstaad. Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti managed to overcome the French Ugo Humbert and Fabrice Martin in the final by 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in 66 minutes.

For the Indian player, this is the third title of his career in doubles, the second this season with Oliveti. He and the Frenchman also won on clay at the ATP 250 in Marrakech.

Olivetti, meanwhile, has two crowns to his name, which he shares with Bhambri this season, and after Sunday’s title they are ranked No. 24 in the PIF ATP Doubles Team Rankings.

Did you know…?

Both of Matteo Berrettini’s titles this year have come on clay, a surface on which he has won a total of five tournaments (all ATP 250) and where he has a record of 10-1 this season.
