The Mutua Madrid Open announced this Wednesday the first invitations for the 2024 main draw, among which those assigned to the Spanish MartÃn Landaluce and the Japanese Kei Nishikori stand out in the men’s event.
In the case of the 18-year-old local #NextGenATP it will be his second participation in the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid. Last year he already had the opportunity to debut on the clay of the Manolo Santana stadium, although he was not able to celebrate it with a victory against the French veteran Richard Gasquet.
No. 317 in the PIF ATP Rankings will arrive in this edition, after winning his first match on the ATP Tour, precisely in an ATP Masters 1000 category tournament last week at the Miami Open presented by Itaú. He then managed to defeat his compatriot Jaume Munar in the first round by 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
For his part, Nishikori, who played his first game of the season in Miami, has also received one of the invitations to the main draw at the Caja Mágica. The Japanese was a finalist in 2014 and only an injury – and Rafael Nadal’s intervention in the final – prevented him from winning the crown (2-6, 6-4, 3-0, Ret).
Nishikori, at 34 years old, will participate in the Mutua Madrid Open for the tenth time. The Japanese player has been a semifinalist in 2015 and 2016, in addition to reaching the quarterfinals in 2013 and 2017. In total, he has a record of 18-8 in the Madrid tournament.
Finally, the two invitations to the WTA draw went to two-time champion Simona Halep (2016, 2017) and 2009 finalist Caroline Wozniacki.
