Lorenzo Musetti reached the quarterfinals on the grass of the BOSS OPEN this Wednesday, after beating German Dominik Koepfer 6-7(9), 7-6(5), 6-3 after being two points away from elimination.
The Italian fifth seed survived in a close match, coming back from 3/5 down in the second set tiebreaker to stay alive in Stuttgart. In one of the most vibrant matches of the season, he hit 15 winners in the third set to advance after two hours and 49 minutes of play.
“It was a very, very complicated game,” Musetti acknowledged. “We had two and a half hours with a very high level of tennis. Dominik played really well. We fought until the end and I feel very proud of myself.”
With his 13th victory of the season, Musetti tied the Lexus ATP Head2Head record with Koepfer (1-1). The No. 30 in the PIF ATP Rankings also reached the Stuttgart quarterfinals last year and will look to take another step this week on German grass. The Italian will face third seed Alexander Bublik or Serbian Hamad Medjedovic, champion of the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF 2023.
Musetti seeks his first title of the season this week. His best results were the fourth rounds in Miami and Monte Carlo.
Reigning champion Frances Tiafoe maintained his title bid after defeating German Yannick Hanfmann 7-5, 7-6(5).
Tiafoe, who defeated Struff in last year’s final to win his third ATP Tour trophy, saved all 11 break points faced to complete the victory after one hour and 55 minutes.
The fourth-seeded American has a record of 13-12 this season. He will seek to regain his best level this week on the German grass, where he will next face Jack Draper or Marcos Giron.
