The Jaume Munar of exactly six years ago is little left. That 21 -year -old boy, who attended in the middle of the press in Miami and with an innocent smile after his first final victory in Masters 1000, does not look almost like Jaume Munar of now, Maduro and calm even minutes after having defeated Daniil Medvedev in this same event to achieve his first victory against Rivals of the Top 10 in Masters 1000.
Be aware of so many differences between both versions, full of current No. 56 of the PIF ATP Rankings. Evidence the personal evolution that he has sought so much in his life.
“I remember that at that time my tennis level was very low, much lower than today, sincerely,” he laughs in an interview with Atptour.com. “I think I have improved in everything, on a physical and technical level in almost all blows. From there I have made many positive changes for good, at the tenistic and mental level …”.
“I was also more immature, I had reactions that I didn’t have to have, I was frustrated before. On the other hand, I had a jacket of huge illusions. Each point, each training was something new. I remember to get to Miami in 2019 and live it as the best tournament I had played until that moment,” adds the ten times champion at the level of ATP Challenger Tour.
If they had told the 2019 Jaume Munar that in six years he would defeat a former world and a previous champion of the tournament in the central track in the world, perhaps he could not have managed so many emotions that the omen would have produced. Now that he has lived in his own flesh, it seems that he is even more taken by the following meeting than by the aforementioned against Medvedev.
“The emotion is not the same. Now I see it from a more tranquility point of view, seeing more than before tennis as a job, but at the same time I enjoy each tournament as if it were the last one,” adds the right -hander of 27 years. “That is why this is a very important victory for me. It marks the ascending path a bit that I have since the beginning of the year and makes me believe even more that I am in a position to start winning these people more.”
“This is a victory that is still another step in becoming.
Of course, something in which his version of six years still exceeds it is in the ranking. Munar became No. 52 in May 2019. That is still the best position of his career in the ranks. But on Sunday you will have an opportunity to change it. A triumph would raise it near No. 49 in the live ranking, being very close to a new personal record in the ranks.
The obstacle is called Gael Monfils, with whom he will face for the first time, but whom he knows perfectly.
“It will be a very hard game. Everyone knows what Gael plays, of what he is capable of, the veteran he has. I get along very well with him. On a physical level, to be the age he is, almost 40, because he is spectacular. A battle awaits me. And at the tennis level he is still one of the best in the world.”
Did you know that …?
Jaume Munar is at a 100th victory in his career at ATP Tour. For now it has a record of 99-139, and 9-5 in the season.
